About me

My first exposure to the world of research was through completing my Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Biomedical Science here at the Woolcock Institute as part of the Respiratory Research Group. My project centred on the molecular changes which occur in COPD patients, causing increased inflammation and worsening prognosis. This was an amazing experience, the team here was very supportive and created a great environment, which spurred my interest in research more leading me to continue my studies with a PhD under the guidance of Prof. Brian Oliver.

My Project

My PhD centres around investigating the factors which contribute to patterns of sex differences in lung disease. The current literature is inconsistent with its recognition of such sexual dimorphisms leading to an incomplete understanding of the diseases overall. My project focuses on the genetic factors, primarily the X & Y sex chromosomes, and how they contribute to disease phenotypes and the mechanisms by which they function. In conjunction, I aim to investigate further the pathway sex hormones contribute to well-known differences between the sexes, and how they interact with genetic factor. This will provide a holistic picture of the factors and pathways which cause distinct disease outcomes for males and females, potentially opening the door for better and more specific treatments.
